Description

Thyme Essential Oil

Thyme essential oil is another good product for parasites. It has some of the same active compounds as oregano. Thyme oil is most helpful for eliminating worms in humans. May help to increase nitric oxide, which can help to inhibit the parasites and assist in removing them. This oil can also damage the internal structures of parasites, which makes it unique in its use as an antiparasitic. It also helps reduce the number of parasite larvae, which may aid in preventing reinfection.  See my blog page for other oils and products for killing parasites.

Thyme oil has antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. It’s commonly used as a preservative in foods, cosmetics, and toiletries. It can also be found as an ingredient in mouthwash.

The compounds contained in Thyme oil that have health benefits include: carvacrol, thymol, linalool, cineol, camphor and borneol.

Alopecia areata (hair loss)

Thyme oil mixed with other essential oils and a carrier oil, coupled with massage, may be used as a treatment to prevent hair loss.  See the research here.

Currently, there’s little data indicating whether or not it is effective for this condition, although anecdotal evidence indicates that a combination of these oils that includes thyme oil may be an effective treatment.  See this website for more information on how to use thyme, lavender, rosemary, and cedarwood essential oils with a carrier oil for treating Alopecia areata.

Safety data

Thyme oil is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for human consumption by the FDA (21CFR182.20). Dilute 1 drop of oil in 2 tsp. (10ml) honey or in 1 cup (250ml) beverage.  However, more dilution may be necessary due to this oil’s potential for irritating mucous membranes.  Not for children under 6 years old.  Use with caution and in greater dilution for children 6 years old and over.

It may also be irritating to the dermal tissue (skin).  It should be avoided during pregnancy.  Use with caution when dealing with high blood pressure.
